(6042) CHESHIRE is a mars ground-grazing asteroid of the main belt , which on 23 November 1990 by the Japanese astronomer Akira Natori and Takeshi Urata at the JCPM Yakiimo station ( IAU code 885) in Shimizu in Shizuoka Prefecture was discovered.
The asteroid was named on February 9, 1999 after the character of the Cheshire Cat from the children's book Alice in Wonderland by the British writer Lewis Carroll .
