(6966) Vietoris is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on September 13, 1991 by the German astronomers Lutz D. Schmadel and Freimut Börngen at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in Thuringia .
The asteroid was named on June 10, 1998 after the Austrian mathematician and supercentenarian Leopold Vietoris (1891-2002), who made numerous contributions to the topology , the most famous of which is probably the Mayer-Vietoris sequence .
