The asteroid (7167) Laupheim was discovered in 1985 at the Palomar Observatory by Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker .
During a visit to the Laupheim planetarium , Carolyn Shoemaker was so enthusiastic about the mainly voluntary work of the association members that in 1999 she arranged for the asteroid to be named in honor of the facility.
The apparent magnitude of 7167 Laupheim is at most 15th magnitude.
