The asteroid (96206) Eschenberg was discovered photographically on September 24, 1992 by professional astronomers Freimut Börngen and Lutz D. Schmadel in Tautenburg near Jena with the local 2 m universal telescope. It bears the name of the Eschenberg observatory . The nomination took place on June 9, 2017

Markus Griesser , who has been director of the Eschenberg observatory for many years, has been close friends for many years with the first discoverer, Freimut Börngen . The second discoverer, Lutz D. Schmadel, director of astronomy at the ARI Astronomical Computing Institute in Heidelberg, died in autumn 2016. For a long time he was a member of the eponymous committee of the International Astronomical Union IAU and is also the author of a highly regarded standard work on asteroid names .
