1,2-Butadiene [ -butaˈdi̯eːn ] is an organic , doubly unsaturated chemical compound from the group of alkenes . It is an isomer of 1,3-butadiene .

1,2-Butadiene can be obtained by vapor phase isomerization of 2-butyne over base-modified catalysts.

1,2-Butadiene is an extremely flammable gas which forms explosive mixtures with air. It's heavier than air. It dissolves only poorly in water (approx. 1 g / l), but it is soluble in hydrocarbons, alcohols and ethers. Its critical temperature is 176.1 ° C, the critical pressure 43 bar, the critical density 0.247 kg / l and the triple point temperature at −136 ° C (melting temperature).
