Toxicological data
As far as possible and customary, SI units are used. Unless otherwise noted, the data given apply to standard conditions .

1,1,1-Trichlor-2-methyl-2-propanol (also called chlorobutanol or chlorobutanol ) is a chemical compound from the group of alcohols .

Extraction and presentation

1,1,1-Trichloro-2-methyl-2-propanol can be obtained by reacting chloroform with acetone . For this reason, when disposing of solvents, it is important to ensure that acetone and chloroform are kept as separate as possible, because the reaction of these two substances can explode.

properties

1,1,1-Trichlor-2-methyl-2-propanol is a flammable, colorless solid with a camphor smell , which is sparingly soluble in water.

1,1,1-Trichloro-2-methyl-2-propanol is always a bit oily, moist and soft as wax, even in the pure solid state. In the case of recrystallizations, it is usually crystallized from a boiling mixture of ethanol and water. It often happens that instead of crystallizing out, it oils out. This happens when the hot solution slowly cools down. To keep the product in the solid state, the boiling solution must be immediately cooled in an ice bath.

use

1,1,1-Trichlor-2-methyl-2-propanol is used as a pain reliever in dentistry and as a preservative for injections.
