1-Naphthoic acid is a chemical compound from the group of naphthalene derivatives . It is isomeric to 2-naphthoic acid .

Extraction and presentation

1-Naphthoic acid can be obtained by hydrolysing 1-cyannaphthalene , by oxidizing 1-acetylnaphthalene with sodium hypochlorite or by reacting 1-naphthylmagnesium bromide with carbon dioxide in ether.

properties

1-Naphthoic acid is a colorless or light green solid that is sparingly soluble in water. The compound enters into the usual reactions of carboxylic acids , but shows steric effects because of the hydrogen atom in the 8th position.

use

1-Naphthoic acid is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of dyes and medicinal products. Due to its fluorescence under UV light , depending on the pH value, it can be used as an indicator for this. It does not fluoresce at pH 2.5, but blue at pH 3.5.
