1-Octanethiol is a chemical compound from the group of thiols .

Extraction and presentation

1-Octanethiol can be obtained from 1-octene and hydrogen sulfide by reacting (anti-Markovnikoff addition). Synthesis by reaction of 1-bromooctane with hydrogen sulfide or thiourea by S N 2 rearrangement or reaction of thioacetic acid with 1-octene is also possible.

properties

1-Octanethiol is a flammable, hardly inflammable, colorless liquid with an unpleasant odor that is practically insoluble in water.

use

1-Octanethiol is used as a polymerization conditioner.

safety instructions

The vapors of 1-octanethiol can form an explosive mixture with air ( flash point 68 ° C, ignition temperature 240 ° C).
