The roof of the building consists of an open frame shaped as a stylized crown that is illuminated at night. The original design provided for a flat roof , but this was rejected by Mayor Thomas Menino . Due to the resemblance of the roof to the android R2-D2 from Star Wars , the building is sometimes called the R2-D2 Building .
The building is located in the Back Bay district on 23 acres (93,078 m²) and offers a total of 240,000 m² for office space and 58,000 m² for retailers. The underground car park is one of the largest of its kind in New England with 3,660 spaces .
