The 188th Mountain Division was a large unit of the mountain troops of the Wehrmacht in World War II .

history

The forerunner of the 188th Mountain Division was the 188th Reserve Mountain Division of the Deputy General Command of the XVIII. Army Corps , Salzburg . On March 1, 1945, the 188th Reserve Mountain Division was renamed and reclassified to 188th Mountain Division. This year, various groups were charged with security tasks and operations against partisans in Croatia and Istria east of Trieste , in the Adelsberg (Slov. Postojna) area. Also used north of Fiume near Lipa (Matulji) (Italian: Lip) and Clana . Attack and defensive battles at Krainer Schneeberg ( Italian: Monte Acuto), near Bistritz (in Gottscheer Land ) and Illyrisch Feistritz , (Italian: Villa del Nevoso). Breakthrough battles at Schämbl (Italian: Sembie) and Herpelie. The remnants of the division ended up in Yugoslav captivity for years ; the commander Hans von Hößlin was convicted by a Yugoslav war criminals court and executed in 1947 .
