Extraction and presentation
2,5-Dimethyl-2,5-hexanediol can be obtained by reducing 2,5-dimethyl-3-hexyn-2,5-diol in the presence of a palladium or platinum catalyst . The compound can also be obtained by reacting the corresponding tertiary alcohol with potassium permanganate .

2,5-Dimethyl-2,5-hexanediol is a colorless solid that is soluble in water. The tetrahydrate has a monoclinic crystal structure with the space group P 2 1 / c (space group no. 14) .
use
2,5-Dimethyl-2,5-hexanediol is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-bis (tert-butylperoxy) hexane for the production of polyethylene copolymers and polyethylene rubbers . It is also used in the synthesis of six- and seven-membered heterocyclic boron compounds that contain intramolecular NBB bonds.
