Isomers

2-bromopentane occurs in two stereoisomeric forms, ( R ) -2-bromopentane and ( S ) -2-bromopentane. Whenever “2-bromopentane” is mentioned in the scientific literature or in this article without any further addition, one always means the racemate , i.e. ( RS ) - (±) -2-bromopentane, a 1: 1 mixture of ( R ) - and ( S ) -2-bromopentane.

2-Bromopentane is produced by the reaction of 2-pentanol with hydrogen bromide .

2-bromopentane is a colorless to yellowish liquid that is practically insoluble in water. It forms highly flammable vapor-air mixtures. The compound has a flash point at 20 ° C.
