5.11 Tactical (" five eleven tactical ") is an American clothing and equipment manufacturer .

Company history

5.11 Tactical origins began with a climbing tour by mountaineer Royal Robbins . When he reached the top of a climb in Yosemite National Park , he noticed that the pants he was wearing were not suitable for climbing. Robbins decided he had to design something more durable, with better functionality. In 1968 he began manufacturing trousers with the name "5.11", which had a trademarked design.

The name "5.11" comes from the highest level of difficulty in climbing, the Yosemite Decimal System .

Robbins sold a 51 percent stake in his company to Dan Costa in 1999 , who after tweaking found that the 5.11 Tactical Pants were becoming increasingly popular at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia .

Costa took over the entire company in 2002, but sold Royal Robbins Clothing but again at its founder Robbins in 2003, retained the brand 5.11 Tactical and founded a new company called 511 (Tactical) Inc . Dan Costa and his co-partner Francisco Morales began working with the FBI to develop functional apparel.

In 2006, 5.11 Tactical was named 211 on Inc. magazine's list of the 500 fastest growing companies in the country .

TA Associates , a private equity -Unternehmen in Boston, has 2007 for 305 million US dollars acquired a majority stake in 5.11 Tactical.

In 2012, 5.11 acquired Tactical Beyond Clothing LLC, a Seattle-based custom outdoor apparel brand, for an undisclosed price.

Also in 2012, the company announced that it would move development jobs to Irvine , California , and leave some functions in Modesto .

In 2014, the company expanded into retail, opening locations in Riverside and Las Vegas . In the following two years stores opened in California, Colorado , Texas , Utah , Florida and Australia .

In 2016, the company was sold to Compass Diversified Holdings for $ 401 million .

As of May 2018, the company owned 48 stores in the USA , Germany ( Hamburg ), Australia , China , Taiwan , Indonesia and Japan .

Trivia

An April Fool's joke in 2012 resulted in the production of a kilt .

The video games " Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands ", " Escape From Tarkov ", " Far Cry 5 " and " The Division 2 " feature 5.11 tactical clothing or in-game advertising .

5.11 is the outfitter or sponsor of the CrossFit Games .
