50 meter run

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 50-meter run is a sprint discipline that is mainly run indoors. It serves as an alternative to the 60-meter run and is now rarely held as an independent competition. Many times are therefore only measured over a section of a longer distance (usually 60 meters). For children under the age of 12, the 50-meter run is the regular sprint discipline. The sprint distance is then extended from the next age group. 50 meters are run on an exclusively straight route, with each runner having to stay in his own lane from start to finish. You start in the low start with the help of starting blocks .

At the European Athletics Indoor Championships , the 50-meter run was held from 1967 to 1969 as well as 1972 and 1981 instead of 60 meters. During these years the 60-meter hurdles competitions were also shortened to 50 m.

The men's world record is currently 5.56 s, set by Donovan Bailey in 1996. Irina Priwalowa is the world record holder for women with 5.96 s, set in 1995. She is the only woman to date to have this distance in ran under 6 seconds.
