- July: After the death of Cambyses II , Darius I ascends the throne as ruler of the Persian Achaemenid Empire . A short time later, several uprisings of the so-called " kings of lies " break out against him in the empire .
- October 3 to December 21 : Nabu-kudurri-usur III. ruled the Babylonian Empire as a usurper for three months , but was then defeated and killed by the Persian great king Dareios I.
- Oroites , the Persian governor in Sardis , lures Polykrates , the tyrant of Samos , into an ambush and kills him.
