A. Arthur Schiller (born September 7, 1902 in San Francisco , † July 10, 1977 in Oneonta, New York ) was an American legal scholar .

life and work

A. Arthur Schiller studied law at the University of California, Berkeley ( BA 1924, MA 1926, JD 1926) and then went to Columbia University in New York as a Fellow , where he spent almost his entire career. After studying at the University of Munich (1929), he was appointed instructor at Columbia Law School and later Professor of Law.

During his time at Columbia University, Schiller gained international renown as an expert and researcher. He taught as a visiting professor at the University of Indonesia , the University of Graz and the University of Erlangen (1949), which awarded him an honorary doctorate in law in 1950. Further guest stays took him to the Free University of Berlin (1953), the University of Istanbul (1955), as a Fulbright Professor at the University of Aberdeen (1957) and the University of Cape Town (1968). He received the Guggenheim scholarship three times (1949, 1955, 1962).

In the 1950s, Schiller specialized in African law. As legal advisor on behalf of the United Nations, he accompanied the annexation of the former Italian colony of Eritrea to Ethiopia from 1951 to 1952 . The Ford Foundation financed two research trips to African countries (1959 and 1963). In 1962 Schiller took part in the First International Congress of Africanists as an observer on behalf of the United States. After retiring in 1971, Schiller stayed at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey in 1973 .

Schiller's research work was broadly based. He dealt with Coptic law, Roman law , Greek papyrology and US military law.
