A Rocha is an international environmental protection organization that operates on the basis of Christian ethos . A Rocha ( Portuguese ): rock, s. ( Rom. 9.33  LUT ) was founded in 1983 in Portugal by the Anglican pastor Peter Harris and his wife Miranda. The organization is interdenominational and is managed by a Board of Trustees (Kommité), on which many qualifications in life sciences , Relief and Development (development aid ) and Financial and Risk Management (finance and risk management) are represented.

A Rocha's goal is environmental protection based on community work. To this end, research and environmental education projects are carried out and supported. The organization is based on five principles: Christianity (Christian), preservation of creation (Conservation), community (Community), cooperation (Cooperation), and cultural understanding (Cross-Cultural). Christian motivation relates to charity , obedience , justice and hope . A Rocha works in approximately 19 countries: Brazil , Bulgaria , Canada , the Czech Republic , Finland , France , Ghana , India , Kenya , Lebanon , Netherlands , New Zealand , Peru , Portugal , South Africa , Switzerland , Uganda , the United Kingdom and the United States . The national organizations are independent and networks are maintained in order to gain a foothold in other countries.

A Rocha has field study centers in British Columbia and Manitoba , France, India, Kenya ( Watamu ), Portugal and England ( Southall , West London).

She also conducts long-term studies in the Bekaa Plain in Lebanon ( Aammiq Swamp ) and in other major wetlands and on bird migration routes such as the Pembina Valley (Canada).

A Rocha International is currently headed by Chair Rebecca Irvin . At her side is the Council of Reference : Prof. Sir Ghillean Prance , RJ Berry , James Stuart Jones , Chris Wright . In England the team consists of Conservation Director Andy Lester and the Theology and Churches Director in Ruth Valerio. The current chairman in England is Steve Hughes.

Programs

Reduction of CO 2 emissions

A Rocha operates the Climate Stewards program, which promotes local reforestation projects as well as methods for improving the carbon footprint . The projects are designed to meet international standards and promote local biodiversity . Climate Stewards appears in the carboncatalog.org list . Projects are currently underway, especially in Ghana ( Damongo ).

"Living lightly"

A Rocha encourages rethinking so that people implement sustainability in their lives. The Living Lightly Campaign is being carried out in England .

Others

A Rocha also runs local projects and offers lectures for congregations and church-friendly institutions. A Rocha is also recognized as an organization of the European Voluntary Service .
