Msunduzi (also uMsunduzi , English The Msunduzi Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of uMgungundlovu in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The administrative seat of the municipality is in Pietermaritzburg . Chris Ndlela is the mayor. The ANC has the majority in the local council.

The name of the municipality comes from the Msunduzi river that flows through the municipality. The isiZulu term umsundisi stands for a person who pushes something or someone aside. The parish covers an area of ​​634 square kilometers.

Msunduzi is bordered by the municipalities of uMngeni and uMshwathi to the north and Mkhambathini to the east . To the south of the parish is Richmond and to the west is Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and Impendle .

In 2011 the community had 618,536 inhabitants. 81.1% of them were black, 9.8% Indian or Asian , 6% white and 2.9% colored .

The first language was 71% isiZulu , 18.7% English, 1.9% Afrikaans , 1.8% isiXhosa , 1.5% Sesotho and 1% isiNdebele .

economy

Msundizi is the economic center of the district. An industrial belt that runs from Durban to Pietermaritzburg and an agricultural belt from Pietermaritzburg to Estcourt intersect here . The transport infrastructure is also well developed. Pietermaritzburg is on the N3 . It is only 45 minutes by car to the port of Durban . Pietermaritzburg also has its own airport, Oribi Airport .

The economic activities in Pietermaritzburg are very diverse. The manufacturing industry is well developed; for example, aluminum products, cut flowers, vehicle components and furniture are exported.
