The Truth About Angels (Original Title: A Rumor of Angels ) is an American drama directed by Peter O'Fallon from 2000 . The script is based on the 1918 novel Thy Son Liveth Messages From A Soldier To His Mother by Grace Duffie Boylan .

James Neubauer is traumatized after the death of his mother (in a car accident). His father Nathan has little time for him. James sneaks into neighbor Maddy Bennett's property. The elderly woman who lost her husband and son is considered something strange in her place. Noticing James, she runs out with a rifle and shoots in the air. James flees, damaging the fence and leaving his bike behind.

Bennett appears on his bike in the house where James lives. She wants the boy to fix the fence himself. James helps the woman fix it.

James sneaks into Bennett's house a little later. He befriends the woman. Bennett reveals to James that she would continue to communicate with her dead son.

Reviews

Kirk Honeycutt wrote in the February 1, 2002 Hollywood Reporter that Vanessa Redgrave would liven up the otherwise impersonal-looking film. The end is " flooded " with sentimentality .

Emanuel Levy wrote in the magazine Variety , the actors are good, but the film was " a bit stupid " ( " a bit dull ") and predictable.
