Surname

Aa is an old Germanic name for a river, which is often found in Westphalia . (see list of waters named Aa ). In the Alpine region of Ache (Old High German Aha ). "Ache", cf. Swedish and Danish Å , "water, river", is a common river name in the German-Dutch language area for rivers or streams . But it is also possible that it comes from the Latin aqua . Rivers were mostly denoted by a for aqua on the maps of the Middle Ages. In Ostbevern the flowing water is also known under the term “Glane”.

course

The stream is called the Oedingberger Bach upstream before reaching the municipal boundary . It is named after the Oedingberge estate . In Ostbevern it flows through the Brock farmers over a length of approx. 10.8 km. There the Bockhorner Bach and the Riedenbach flow to the brook . The last part, approx. 1.5 km, the river forms the border between the district of Warendorf and the district of Steinfurt . After leaving the municipality, the stream is then called Eltingmühlenbach . The name gives the house Eltingmühle in Schmedehausen , which had storage rights.

history

On February 11, 1930, the “Aa Regulatory Cooperative” was founded in Ostbevern. The Aa should better drain the surrounding green areas in order to gain new arable land. On February 15, 1933, the "Aa-Regulierungsgenossenschaft" commissioned the Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten, to carry out the work after the State Labor Office of Westphalia had promised funding two days earlier, which is not surprising, since Labor Minister Franz Seldte was the chairman of the Stahlhelm . This work was completed in autumn 1933 after a good eight months. However, this led to a drop in the groundwater level in the summer months. In the 1980s, as part of land consolidation, a water division and barrages were built to regulate the water level. In addition, the slow-flowing Aa received a gravel bed in the lower reaches to prevent it from meandering .
