List of waters named Aa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aa , also Ache in the Alpine region (Old High German Aha "Ache", see there, cf. Swedish and Danish Å , "water, river", related to the Latin aqua ) is a common river name in the German-Dutch language area and in German-speaking Switzerland for rivers or streams . In Germany this name is concentrated on Westphalia. For rivers in Lower Saxony , the corresponding name or part of the name is usually Aue or -au . A lot of rivers and brooks in Schleswig-Holstein are called Au with some additional name, in the Danish version of the name it is Å with an additional name. The old Frisian equivalent was ē , so in East Frisia the term marriage is used for many watercourses.

Some lakes were named after rivers with the name Aa (see Aasee ).

The name of the city of Aachen can also be traced back to this old high German word stem.
