action

The film tells the story of the singer Aaliyah who, from a poor family with a tough childhood, has become one of the most successful and famous R&B singers in the world, right up to her tragic death in 2001.

production

In mid-June 2014, the television station Lifetime announced that it would produce a television film about the late R&B singer Aaliyah for the fall of 2014 . The American actress and singer Zendaya , who will record four new songs for the film , was presented as the main actress . After the production was announced, there were violent protests from the Aaliyah family and fans.

On June 29, 2014, Zendaya officially announced that she had dropped out of the film and the future of the film was unclear. In a later released video, Zendaya said of her exit: “The reason I chose not to do the Aaliyah movie has nothing to do with the people who told me I couldn't or not being talented enough or not being black enough. The reason was because there was no appreciation for the production and there were problems with the music rights and I felt that it wasn't being handled well enough (...) I did my best to reach the family and wrote a letter , but I couldn't, and so it felt morally wrong to me. (...) ".

In mid-July 2014, the film productions were resumed and Alexandra Shipp was engaged for the leading role that gave the title. Shooting of the film began at the end of July 2014. In August it was announced that the roles for Timbaland and Missy Elliott had been cast with actors Izaak Smith and Chattrisse Dolabaille .
