population
In 2011 the community had 211,060 inhabitants. Of these, 95.4% were black, 3.5% white and 0.5% colored .
The first language was 89.2% isiZulu , 2.9% Afrikaans , 2.5% English and 1% isiNdebele .
economy
The main industry in the municipality is agriculture. The topography of the region is suitable for the cultivation of many agricultural products. Among other things, corn, peanuts and soybeans are grown. Livestock was an important industry, but it is severely hampered by rising costs and cattle theft. A major problem is the fact that most of the raw products are processed outside of the region. The timber industry is growing very fast and a large part of it is exported. In addition, no processing industry has established itself so far.
Thanks to the good transport links, the community has a lot of potential for tourism. There is plenty of wildlife and over 370 different species of birds. There are also many game farms. The region is ideal for ecotourism . The various historical sites are also important for tourism, for example the site of the Battle of the Blood River , the Battlefields Route and the Zulu Kingdom in general.
