The Abbenstein in the Harz is 769  m above sea level. NHN high elevation near Torfhaus in the non-parish Harz region of the Goslar district in Lower Saxony .

The Abbenstein is located in the Upper Harz in the Harz National Park , to which the Harz Nature Park adjoins a little north of the elevation . It rises 2.5 km northeast of Torfhaus , a district of the mountain town of Altenau . To the east, the landscape descends into the Ecker valley with the Eckerstausee located to the northeast ; to the south-southeast it leads over the Abbe valley to the Quitschenberg ( 881.5  m ) and to the south-west over the Radau to the Lerchenköpf ( 821  m ) . The small Ecker tributary Fuhler Lohnbach rises on the northern flank of the Abbenstein .

Natural allocation

The Abbenstein lies in the natural spatial main unit group Harz (No. 38) on the border of the main unit Hochharz (381) with the sub-unit Torfhäuser Hügelland (381.1) in the south to the main unit Upper Harz (380) with the sub-unit Radautal (380.5) in the northwest and the sub-unit Northern and Eastern Brocken Foreland (380.6) and their natural area Northern Brocken Foreland (380.60) in the northeast.

Protected areas

Parts of the fauna-flora-habitat area Harz National Park (Lower Saxony) (FFH no. 4129-302; 157.7  km² ) and the Harz National Park bird sanctuary (VSG no. 4229-402; 155.59 ) are located on the Abbenstein km²). Parts of the Harz landscape protection area (district of Goslar) ( CDDA no. 321402; designated 2001; 389.75 km²) extend to its northern slope .

hike

The historic Kaiserweg runs along the west side of the Abbenstein, which was still an excursion destination in the forest in the 19th century and whose northern flanks have rocky cliffs . The elevation can be reached this way, for example, because there are no roads leading to it.
