action

Peter Winkler lives with his fiancé Hella in Berlin in Frau Weber's Pension Splendide . A collection of failed existences has come together here. Only Peter and Hella seem happy. Peter receives the offer for a better-paid work in Dresden . With this career advancement, he hopes to finally be able to marry Hella. He was delighted to tell other guests about it, but remained silent to Hella because he wanted to surprise her with it. However, some of the guests can't keep their mouths shut, and that's how Hella hears the news. Thereupon she does not tell Peter that she had a dress and a hat reserved in a shop without having the necessary money. In her financial need, she borrows the money from a male guest at the pension. While Hella is picking up her things, Peter learns that his fiancée has secretly borrowed money and believes that she is cheating on him. Without waiting for Hella's return, Peter jealously leaves the pension and does not return to her.

background

After the joint production of some Berlin film enthusiasts Menschen am Sonntag and a short film, Abschied is the first sound film by director Robert Siodmak. This film was also her debut for lead actress Brigitte Horney.

The film was made from June 27 to July 7, 1930 in the Ufa studio in Neubabelsberg. The buildings were created by Max Knaake. The production company was Universum-Film AG ( UFA , Berlin). On August 14, 1930, B.26590, the film was subject to a “youth ban”. Farewell premiered on August 25, 1930 in Berlin's Kurfürstendamm UT. After a year, Ufa brought out a version extended by an epilogue. The film was first broadcast on television on February 22, 1981 by Bayern 3.

criticism

"Berlin milieu piece, staged in a surprisingly realistic style for the early days of the sound film."

At the time in Lichtbild-Bühne No. 204 it was read: "After yesterday's strong applause, he [Siodmark] has again succeeded in making a film that the audience really likes." Siodmark's intentions are "the best", he wants "Away from the past, the trashed, lying, kitschy". And yet it slips back into those districts. In leading the actors, he tries to “loosen up, nuance”. Some things are "overplayed and garish". “Brigitte Horney [is] remarkable, who should develop well with greater confidence in the game. Aribert Mog as a lover is not very pleasant. ”Martha Ziegler, Emilia Unda and Sokoloff would put“ brilliant guys on their feet ”.

The critic Hans Feld concluded in Film-Kurier No. 201: “Robert Siodmak will go on to stylize sound and image; you can already feel it in this film. What already predestines him for great filmmaking is the harmlessness of grabbing, the courage to move on, over imperfections and momentary insolubility. This is how you make film stories and - film history. "

Award

In 1930 the film was given the title “artistic”.
