The Abbey of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Remy-de-Provence , a French commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur , was in 11/12. Century erected. The abbey has been a protected architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1883 .

history

Located near the ancient city of Glanum , the abbey was initially a priory of the Saint-André de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon abbey since 982 and was converted into an Augustinian canons monastery in 1080 . Since 1117 it has been named after the nearby Julier mausoleum . 1316 was pin the Cathedral Chapter of the Cathedral of Avignon assumed. In 1605 the Franciscans took over the monastery, where they established an asylum.

Vincent van Gogh lived in the monastery from May 3, 1889 to May 16, 1890 , which was converted into a private mental hospital after the French Revolution . Today the sanatorium is called "Maison de Santé de Saint-Paul".

The simple church, the facade of which was changed in the 18th century, has a nave , two narrow aisles with a quarter-ton vault and a choir with three apses . The cloister built between 1140 and 1150 from finely worked ashlar stones with massive pillars and double columns in the arched positions has been preserved. In the older north and east wing, the capitals are decorated with foliage and the capitals of the west and south wings, which were built at the end of the 12th century, are decorated with numerous ancient forms of decoration (foliage, animals, masks, etc.).
