The Roman Catholic Abbey Church Notre-Dame in Mouzon ( Ardennes department ) in France is a Gothic church built from the end of the 12th century . It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1840 .

history

The former abbey dates back to before the 9th century. At first there was a nunnery that housed the relics of St. Viktor von Mouzon took up. After 889 the nuns were replaced by regular canons who were replaced after 970 by Benedictine monks who came from the Thin-le-Moutier priory . In 1653 the church suffered severe damage, which was repaired between 1661 and 1663. The abbey was dissolved during the French Revolution in 1790 and the church first became a temple of equality and reason and later a parish church . The church was thoroughly renovated between 1855 and 1890 by Émile Boeswillwald , a pupil of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc , and the flamboyant window on the west facade was replaced by a rose window . During the Second World War , the church suffered damage, including the rosette of the south transverse arm.

inside view

The 65 m long, 18 m wide and 21 m high church of remarkable uniformity was built from 1195 to 1200 at the same time as the early Gothic cathedrals in Paris , Laon and Noyon . In 1212 the three- bay choir was completed with a wreath of five chapels. The three-aisled nave has eight bays. The transept protrudes over the aisles. The upper parts of the towers were not completed until the 16th century. The crossing carried a tower until it was destroyed in 1653. Except for the west facade, the transept facades and the buttresses in the south , the exterior is unadorned.

Wall elevation

The internal structure consists of four levels: main arcades, galleries , triforium and upper aisles (window zone), above a six-part ribbed vault. Only the tympanum of the portal has survived , showing the Trinity, the life of the Virgin Mary and the martyrdom of St. Viktor represents.

In the monastery buildings, which were renovated in 1676, there is currently a retirement home.

The organ by the organ builder Christophe Moucherel from Toul with an ornate case dates from 1725. It was restored in 1991 by Bartolomeo Formentelli .
