Adalbert Rebić

Adalbert Rebić (born January 23, 1937 in Klenovec Humski (today part of the Hum na Sutli parish near Krapina , Croatia ); † February 20, 2014 in Zagreb ) was a Yugoslav or Croatian Catholic clergyman , biblical scholar and minister .

Life

From 1956 to 1961 Adalbert Rebić studied philosophy in Zagreb and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (1956/61) as well as Catholic theology at the Gregorian (1961/65). After studying Biblical exegesis at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome (1965/68), he was at the Gregorian University with a thesis on biblical theology for Doctor of theology doctorate.

Rebić was Professor of Biblical Studies , Semitic and Oriental Languages such as Hebrew , Arabic , Syriac and Aramaic, and Biblical Archeology at the Catholic Faculty of the University of Zagreb . He also taught at the University of Zadar and the Theological Faculty in Đakovo .

He was Canon of the Zagreb Cathedral . Since 1966 he has organized seminars in Israel for theology students and pilgrimages to the Holy Land . From 1972 he was President of the Croatian Marian Institute. In 1990 Pope John Paul II appointed him to the International Marian Pontifical Academy . In 2007 he retired.

During the Croatian war from 1991 to 1995 he was head of the government agency for displaced persons and refugees and in 1995 Minister for Humanitarian Affairs .

Adalbert Rebić has published more than 400 scientific papers, including 28 monographs. With his work Sve moje izbjeglice (German: All my refugees ) he documented the suffering of refugees and displaced persons from Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. He was director of the Kršćanska sadašnjost publishing house in Zagreb and editor-in-chief of the religious lexicon in the Lexicographical Institute.

In 1974 he became a member of the Association of Literary Translators ( Društvo hrvatskih književnih prevodicala , DHKP). As a translator, he published books on the prophet Jeremiah , Lamentations of Jeremiah, and the book of the prophet Ezekiel . In 1968 he translated the Bible into Croatian .

He has been honored several times with the highest state awards, including by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts . In 1990 he was accepted into the Jewish cultural association Kulturno društvo Miroslav Šalom Freiberger .
