Adam N. Smith (born September 7, 1980 in Modesto , California ) is an American snowboarder . His focus is on the alpine disciplines of parallel slalom and parallel giant slalom , at the beginning he was an all-rounder in all disciplines.

Adam Smith began a career as a professional snowboarder right out of high school . Smith is single and lives in Bend , Oregon . In his athletic career, he has already survived two serious injuries to the spine. With almost one hundred World Cup appearances, he is one of the most experienced international athletes.

FIS races, Continental Cup and Nor-Am Cup

At the age of fourteen, Smith gained his first international competition experience in parallel slalom and parallel giant slalom at FIS races in Sun Valley ( Blaine County (Idaho) ) and at Sugarloaf Ski Resort in Franklin County (Maine) . He also competed in FIS and Continental Cup races in his home country in 1996, for the first and only time in the halfpipe . His best result up to that point was 25. After he only contested one race in 1997, he achieved his first podium and victory in the 1998/1999 season. In January 1999 he was runner-up in a Continental Cup race in snowboard cross and shortly afterwards he won the FIS giant slalom in Snowmass ( Colorado ); further top results followed by the end of the season with top ten placements, and his World Cup debut also took place at this time. He established himself as one of the top riders in the alpine disciplines of slalom, parallel slalom, giant slalom, parallel giant slalom and super-G on the snowboard and finished in the top ten in more than half of his races. His statistics show a total of sixteen podium places with four wins by the end of the 2007/2008 season, the last of which in Bromley at a Nor-Am Cup race .

In the world cup

In the World Cup he made his debut in the 1998/1999 season with a 30th place in the Super-G at Mount Bachelor in his native Oregon. Another five races of the season followed, but it wasn't until next winter that he made a top ten place. Two seventh places in Sapporo , one in boardercross and the other in parallel giant slalom within two days were his best results. The 2000/2001 season was disappointing with lower ranks and some failures. Only eighth place at the Cross - again in Sapporo - was a top result. The following season, Smith paused the World Cup and focused on FIS and North America Cup races in Canada and the United States . In qualifying for the 2002 Winter Olympics , he injured his back. This injury cost him to participate in the Olympics and also set him back considerably overall. In FIS races he was able to regain his form, but a fourteenth place remained the best result of the post-Olympic season. The 2003/2004 season , in which he was finally able to celebrate his first World Cup victory, was much more successful . The victory at the parallel slalom in Landgraaf stands out from a strong season with three top ten and further good placements in the midfield. With sixteen place in the discipline ranking of the overall World Cup, this was also reflected in the season result. He achieved the same overall rank in 2005, when he did not achieve a podium place, but managed to achieve the points even more evenly. Although the 2005/2006 season started with third place in Landgraaf, it was overall weaker than the two previous years. 2007 was also less successful. Only in 2007/2008 did he bring top results again, including third place in the second race of the season in Sölden , and Smith finished the discipline world cup in 21st place.

The 2009 season began Smith equal the season opener with a second place in Landgraaf in the slalom. In Limone Piemonte he finished eleventh in the giant slalom and again achieved a top ten result with seventh place in the slalom in Arosa .

World championships

So far Smith has participated in four world championships, 2001 in Madonna di Campiglio was the nineteenth place in the parallel giant slalom compared to a failure in the parallel slalom. In 2003 in Kreischberg he was 20th in the slalom and two years later he celebrated his best result with fourth place in the giant slalom at Whistler Mountain . He did not compete in the slalom, but underlined his affiliation to the top of the world with twelfth place in this competition in Arosa 2007.
