Adamstown is the capital and the only settlement of the Pitcairn Islands and is located in the northeast of the only inhabited island of Pitcairn in the Pacific . As of 2017, all 39 residents of the island live in Adamstown. Adamstown has an area of 20 acres .

The place is named after John Adams alias Alexander Smith, one of the mutineers of the Bounty . The village grew out of the first settlement of the Bounty mutineers who landed on the island of Pitcairn on January 20, 1790.

Structure and facilities

Adamstown is laid out in the form of a loosened scattered settlement , with larger green spaces between the houses. Without exception, the houses are simple, one-story residential buildings, made of timber frame construction , with a roof made of corrugated iron. Since the number of inhabitants is constantly decreasing, many of the approximately three dozen houses are now empty. The place is accessible with unpaved roads and footpaths. The main road between the school in the north and The Landing in the south is paved.

Adamstown features, among other things.

Most of the facilities are located around The Square , the main square of the town.

Infrastructure

Power is supplied by three diesel generators that run from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. There is no central water supply, the houses each have their own cisterns. There are modern means of communication, television and radio via satellite.

At the foot of the settlement, in Bounty Bay , there is a jetty called The Landing .
