Adnan Ersöz

Adnan Ersöz (* 1917 in Sarıyer , Istanbul Province ; † October 13, 1991 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish general who, among other things, served as Commander-in-Chief of the Army in 1977 (Türk Kara Kuvvetleri) and between 1978 and 1979 as Director of the MIT Intelligence Service ( Millî İstihbarat Teşkilâtı ) was.

Life

After attending school, Ersöz began his officer training at the Army School ( Harp Okulu ) , which he completed in 1936 as an ensign (Asteğmen) . After numerous assignments within the armed forces (Türk Silahlı Kuvetleri) he was promoted to Brigadier General (Tuğgeneral) in 1963 , Major General (Tümgeneral) in 1965 and Lieutenant General (Korgeneral) in 1969 .

After his promotion to general (Orgeneral) Ersöz was on August 29, 1973 as the successor to General Nihat Tulunay Deputy Chief of Staff (Türk Silahlı Kuvetleri Genelkurmay II. Başkanı) and exercised this function until his replacement by General Kenan Evren on August 30, 1975 . He was himself on August 25, 1975 as the successor of General Hüseyin Doğan Özgöçmen Commander in Chief of the 1st Army (Birinci Ordu) and remained in this post until he was replaced on August 30, 1977 by General Nurettin Ersin . Most recently he was on July 18, 1977, as the successor to General Semih Sancar, acting Commander-in-Chief of the Army and was replaced again on August 30, 1977 by General Kenan Evren.

On July 13, 1978, Ersöz succeeded Hamza Gürgüç as director of the MIT intelligence service (Millî İstihbarat Teşkilâtı) , which is responsible for protecting Turkish territory , the Turkish people , maintaining the state's integrity , maintaining the continued existence, independence and security of Turkey as well as their constitution and the constitutional state order is responsible. Furthermore, his areas of responsibility include counter-espionage and the defense against other subversive activities directed against Turkey . He remained in this position until he was replaced by Bülent Türker on November 19, 1979. After the military coup of September 12, 1980 , he became a representative of the National Security Council ( Millî Güvenlik Konseyi ) member of the Advisory Council (Danışma Meclisi) of the Grand National Assembly TBMM ( Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi) .

On October 13, 1991 Ersöz was killed in an assassination attempt at his home. The attack is said to have been carried out by Devrimci Sol supporters (DEV-SOL) Metin Dikme and Yasemin Okuyucu, who were subsequently arrested. Ersöz was then buried in the Emirgân Reşitpaşa cemetery.
