Adolf Bayer
Adolf Bayer (born November 22, 1909 in Würzburg ; † June 9, 1999 in Karlsruhe ) was a German architect and university professor .
Life
Bayer first studied art and then from 1929 to 1932 architecture at the Technical University of Karlsruhe . In 1935 he passed his diploma . He was assistant to Otto Ernst Schweizer at the Technical University of Karlsruhe (until 1937) and then worked as an architect for the Mainz city administration and was also involved in the reconstruction of the city under the direction of Marcel Lods .
In 1951 he became director of urban planning in Offenbach am Main and built buildings such as the Federal Monopoly Administration for spirits and schools such as the Rudolf Koch School and the Beethoven School. In 1961 he was appointed as the successor to Schweizer as professor for urban development and design at the Technical University of Karlsruhe; he stayed there until his retirement .
Work (selection)
His buildings are characterized by a varied play of colors and materials. He often used light clinker bricks, which he set off with dark red plastered walls and combined with filigree blue window frames.
- 1946–1948: Pedestrian streets and the Unité d´Habitation on Wallstrasse in Mainz
- 1947–1948: Forest school in Offenbach-Tempelsee
- 1947/1948: Competition design for the administrative building of the district government of Lower Franconia in Würzburg
- 1952/1953: Commercial vocational school in Offenbach (greatly changed)
- 1953: Offenbach City Library ("Bücherturm")
- 1954–1955: Administration building of the Federal Monopoly Administration for Spirits in Offenbach (popularly: "Schnapspalast")
- Friedrich Ebert School
- 1955–1956: Beethoven School in Offenbach (demolished in 2011)
- 1957: Rudolf Koch School in Offenbach (2010 thermally insulated and significantly changed)
- 1959: Urban planning for the Offenbach city center
- 1960: Competition design for the town hall and city center of Pforzheim
- 1958–1961: Parkbad in Offenbach (under monument protection , today part of the Sheraton Hotel)
- 1964–1971: Spatial research report for the Central Upper Rhine Region
- 1965–1981: Development plans for Villingen-Schwenningen
