Adolf "Addi" Gabriel (born July 2, 1943 in Kiel ; † July 14, 2015 ) was a German handball player , handball trainer and football official .

Career

Adolf Gabriel grew up in the Hassee district of Kiel . In 1949 he began with handball at THW Kiel , first as a field player, then later as a goalkeeper . In addition, he trained the youth of the zebras and won the German championship in 1971 with the A youth team. In 1972 he went to KSV Holstein , where he was the successor to Kurt Bartels , who moved to THW, coach of the women's handball team. After just one season he returned to THW and took over from Bartels as coach of the men's team, which had been relegated to the regional league at the end of the 1972/73 season . Under Gabriel the THW succeeded in the following season as champions of the Regionalliga Nord with no loss points, the immediate promotion to the handball Bundesliga . In 1975 he left the THW and originally wanted to be a trainer for Holstein again. But after some players spoke out against him, he became a coach at the men's upper division Büdelsdorfer TSV .

From 1978 Gabriel was the full-time managing director of the Schleswig-Holstein Football Association . In 1987 he had to end his professional career due to a serious illness.

Adolf Gabriel was married to Renate Gabriel (née Reese), a former handball player of KSV Holstein. The couple had two sons who both play handball. Thimo , the elder, was a junior national player and played as a goalkeeper with the HSG Tarp-Wanderup in the 2nd handball league .
