Adolf Herkenrath (born April 8, 1928 in Siegburg ; † August 5, 2009 there ) was a German politician ( CDU ). He was a member of the Bundestag and mayor of Siegburg.

Life

Herkenrath was born in 1928 as the son of a high school teacher and completed an agricultural apprenticeship from 1948 to 1950. He then studied agricultural science until 1953 and became a qualified farmer. After that he was a full-time state youth officer and diocesan youth leader in the Archdiocese of Cologne until 1960 . During this time he was also federal secretary in the Federation of German Catholic Youth . From 1960 until 1967 he headed a Cologne branch office of the community. From 1967 to 1973 he was head of the Institute for International Solidarity in the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung . After that he was federal manager of the local political association of the CDU / CSU. For his services, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1976 .

Before Herkenrath became a member of the Bundestag in 1980, he oversaw Latin America contacts for the Konrad Adenauer Foundation for many years. This also included trips to Latin America. Herkenrath was one of the supporters of the Chile-based sect Colonia Dignidad and relativized the human rights violations committed there. He was also criticized in 1989 after he had congratulated the Republican MEP Hans-Günter Schodruch "on behalf of the Siegburgers" on being elected to the European Parliament .

In 2009 he succumbed to cancer.

Herkenrath became a member of the CDU in 1952. Politically, he only appeared in 1961 when he was elected to the city ​​council of Siegburg and three years later became honorary mayor of the city. He remained mayor of Siegburg until 1989. In the Bundestag election in 1980 , Herkenrath was elected to the German Bundestag in constituency 64 (Rhein-Sieg-Kreis I) and was re-elected in the following three Bundestag elections. He was a member of the Food, Agriculture and Forestry Committee in all legislative terms. From June 1986 to October 1990 he was also a full member of the Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. After Herkenrath no longer stood for election in the 1994 federal election , he left the Bundestag.
