Adolf Jäger (sculptor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adolf Jäger (born February 10, 1895 in Frankfurt am Main ; † December 22, 1983 ) was a German sculptor and coin designer . The design of the pfennig coins of the DM currency , which were minted from 1948, made him known as a pfennig hunter .

Career

After attending the Weißfrauenschule in Frankfurt am Main, Jäger learned the craft of chaser in a Frankfurt metal goods factory . After obtaining his master craftsman's certificate , Jäger started his own business in 1921; For decades he worked in his own studio in Frankfurt.

Medalist

In 1948 Jäger designed the penny coins for the DM currency . The “2” on the value side of the two-pfennig coin did not come from him; Jäger later described it as not matching the digits of his designs. Jäger's coin design was later criticized for the fact that the horizontal line at the foot of the oak branch of his design suggested that it was a seedling ; such a one, however, lacks the necessary two-way structure at the top.

Jäger also later took part in competitions for coin design, for example for the 2-mark piece minted from 1957 with the portrait of Max Planck , his successors from 1973 and for the commemorative coins " Johann Gottlieb Fichte " and " Johannes Gutenberg "; however, none of these drafts was implemented.

Jäger designed some of the medals awarded by his hometown of Frankfurt , they and other medals designed by him can be found in the coin cabinet of the historical museum there . Jäger participated in the revision of the state coat of arms of Hesse after the Second World War .
