Adolf Kurrein

Adolf Kurrein (born January 28, 1846 in Trebitsch , Moravia , Austrian Empire ; died October 23, 1919 in Teplice , Czechoslovakia ) was an Austrian rabbi and Zionist .

Life

Adolf Kurrein lost his father at the age of two and grew up with his sister Katharina with his mother, a seamstress. After receiving a thorough Jewish education, he left his parents' home at the age of 15 and moved to Brno , where he graduated from high school in 1866 . He then went to Vienna, where he heard lectures from Adolf Jellinek , with whom he was to become a lifelong friend. In 1871 he graduated from the University of Vienna with a degree in philosophy, history and mathematics with a doctorate. A year later he received the rabbi diploma . Now he held the office of rabbi in various places: in 1872 in St. Pölten, 1877 in Linz , 1883 in Bielitz in Austrian Silesia , where he mainly worked as a secondary school teacher, and in 1888 in Teplitz-Schönau . In January 1877 he married Jessie Loewe (1849–1934), daughter of the orientalist Louis Loewe ; two of her five children were murdered in Auschwitz concentration camp . The son Viktor Kurrein (1881–1974) was also a rabbi in Linz until he fled to England in 1938. Under the impression of Theodor Herzl , Adolf Kurrein became involved towards the end of his life for the newly emerging political Zionism . He wrote numerous articles and also made some contributions to the Jewish Encyclopedia .
