Adolf Martin Pleischl (born October 10, 1787 in Hossenreith , Bohemia, † July 31, 1867 in Dorf an der Enns ) was a chemist and doctor.

Life

Adolf Martin Pleischl was born to poor parents in the small town of Hossenreith near Oberplan . In 1803 he attended the academic high school in Prague and studied philosophy here from 1806, then medicine from 1809. In 1815 he became a doctor of medicine and, in addition to his medical practice, devoted himself to studying chemistry. From 1821 to 1838 he held the post of professor of general and pharmaceutical chemistry at Prague University. During this time he made great contributions to the restructuring of the chemical-pharmaceutical institute and the training of capable chemists (e.g. Johann August Natterer , Johann Florian Heller ). In 1838 he was appointed to Vienna . Here, too, he designed the chemical-pharmaceutical school according to modern principles. In 1848 he was surprisingly and humiliatingly retired. In 1849 he became the Imperial Government appointed and in later years the Knight's Cross of the Franz-Joseph-Order excellent. His daughter Maria was married to the famous doctor Johann von Oppolzer .

In 1949, Pleischlgasse in Vienna- Simmering (11th district) was named after him.

Services

He carried out the first analyzes of the water (Vltava, well, tap water) from Prague . His analyzes of the thermal springs in the West Bohemian health resorts made a decisive contribution to the boom in the Czech health resort. He was an avid advertiser for spa treatments in Karlsbad , Marienbad , Franzensbad and Teplitz . Pleischl made a particularly good contribution to promoting the export of Carlsbad sparkling water. The shipping of mineral water and fizzy products was soon a rich source of income for the city. He made a significant contribution with the invention of enamel , which is harmless to health , with which metal dishes are lined to protect against corrosion . He carried out the first experiments to liquefy carbon dioxide by means of pressure and low temperature, these were only successfully completed by his student Johann August Natterer .
