Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas (born March 6, 1918 in New Britain (Connecticut) , USA ; † November 29, 1957 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian resistant, partisan leader, brigadier general and de facto head of state of Lithuania ( posthumously recognized on November 20, 2018 ).

Life

In 1921 the Ramanauskas family returned to Lithuania and bought the land. In 1936 Ramanauskas graduated from the Motiejus Gustaitis Grammar School in Lazdijai and then studied at the Klaipėda Pedagogical Institute . Then he graduated from the Kaunas War School . From 1940 to 1945 he taught at the Alytus teacher training college .

After the Soviet occupation he became a partisan. He headed a unit in Nemunaitis and in the summer of 1945 Batalion Merkinė and in 1946 the Merkys unit. In autumn 1947 he headed the Dainava district and from 1948 the southern Lithuania region and fought in what is now the district of Alytus . From 1949 he was Jonas Žemaitis-Vytautas' deputy . In 1950 he became a partisan colonel . He then wrote a book “Daugel krito sūnų…” In 1956, he and his wife were arrested in Kaunas and sat in the KGB prison in Soviet Lithuania . He was tortured several times. In 1957 the Soviet Aukščiausiasis Teismas sentenced him to death .

After his execution he was secretly interred in the Našlaičių cemetery . His grave was only found in 2018 and his remains were placed in the Antakalnis cemetery in autumn 2018 .

Ramanauskas was married. With his wife Birutė Mažeikaitė he had the daughter Auksutė Ramanauskaitė-Skokauskienė (* 1950), now a Lithuanian politician.

A middle school has been named after him since 1994, and since 2010 the Adolfas-Ramanauskas-Vanagas-Gymnasium Alytus ( lit.Alytaus Adolfo Ramanausko-Vanago gimnazija ).

In 1998 he was posthumously awarded the rank of Brigadier General . In addition, on the occasion of his 100th birthday in 2018, his bones were reburied at a state funeral .
