Adolph Friedrich Christian Scharenberg (born April 21, 1766 in Neustrelitz ; † April 8, 1852 there ) was a German portrait painter.

Life

Adolph Scharenberg was born as the son of the Neustrelitz court glazier and town gentleman Adolph Friedrich Scharenberg (1740–1800).

Scharenberg received his artistic training in Berlin . He mainly worked with oil, pastels, miniatures and porcelain. In the years from 1804 to 1839 he worked in various places such as Doberan (1815), Strelitz (1804-1806), Güstrow (1805, 1828, 1835, 1839) and Neustrelitz (1816). Scharenberg was a Freemason and on October 31, 1815 co-founder of the St. Johannis Lodge Zum Friedensbunde in Neubrandenburg ; he was himself a member of the Masonic Lodge To the Three Golden Anchors . In 1824 he was a castle servant ( castellan ) in Mirow . There he took over drawing lessons at the grand ducal teachers' college for the first few years.

Red madder

Scharenberg was particularly adept at dealing with madder , where he had decades of experience in divorce and other treatment of the various components of madder. He discovered u. a. a method by which excellently beautiful varnishes are obtained from madder. He produced over 80 shades, from blood red to the lightest pink, carmoisine pungent into purple and brown and many more. Scharenberg also tried to apply his experiences with madder in dyeing, where he was able to achieve remarkable results.

In 1850 Scharenberg took part in the German industrial exhibition in the Central-Halle (Leipzig) . A year later he was also represented at the Great Exhibition (German London industrial exhibition ) in Hyde Park. There he presented a good selection of madder lacquers, manufactured using a new and inexpensive process that makes them resistant to the effects of light. For this achievement he received an honorable award and a medal.
