Adrian Wagner (born April 23, 1978 in Hamburg ) is a former German handball player who was active in the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga for 17 years . He is currently working as a handball trainer.

Career as a player

Wagner learned to play handball since 1987 at AMTV Hamburg , where he was immediately noticed as a great talent. With the B-youth he became German runner-up in 1995. His professional career began Left Wing in 1996 when VfL Bad Schwartau , where he initially was only a reservist and was used primarily in the second team. It was only when the regular left winger Marek Kordowiecki injured himself in a Bundesliga match against SG Flensburg-Handewitt two years later that Wagner managed to fight for a regular place. In the 2001/02 season, the then VfL captain suffered from Pfeiffer's glandular fever . In the summer of 2002, Wagner and the entire Schwartauer squad moved to HSV Hamburg , which took over the Bundesliga license from VfL Schwartau.

In the summer of 2003, Wagner moved to THW Kiel , which was then building up a new team. The contract, which expired after the 2005/06 season, was not extended. Then Wagner played for the second division TSV Bayer Dormagen and also began a commercial apprenticeship. From September 1, 2007, Wagner played for VfL Gummersbach . In the summer of 2011, Wagner prematurely terminated his contract with VfL Gummersbach and returned to VfL Bad Schwartau. After the 2012/13 season, Wagner ended his career. From October 2015, Wagner was a member of the HSG Ostsee N / G management team, where he helped out with staffing bottlenecks until the end of the 2015/16 season. After Wagner was no longer active, he played three games for SG Hamburg-Nord in September 2018 .

He made his national team debut on May 7, 1999 against Belgium . He was used a total of 24 times and scored 22 goals. Wagner was in the extended DHB line-up for the 2003 World Cup and was only deleted from the squad a few days before the start of the tournament.

Career as a coach

From 2011 Adrian Wagner was involved in setting up a handball academy in Hamburg, where he worked as a trainer. In 2011 he also took on an assistant coaching position in the selection area of ​​the Hamburg handball association . He later took over the national team for the 1997 class. On July 1, 2013, Wagner took over the position of national coach at the Hamburg regional association. In addition, from the 2013/14 season to the end of the 2015/16 season, he coached the B-Jugend from HSV Hamburg. In January 2016, Wagner headed the training of the Bundesliga team at HSV Hamburg, as the regular coach Michael Biegler was in charge of the Polish national team at the 2016 European Championships . In January 2017 he took over the coaching position of the upper division SG Hamburg-Nord. On January 31, 2019, Wagner ended his work at the Hamburg regional association.
