Adriaan van Royen
Adriaan van Royen , or Adrianus van Royen (born November 11, 1704 in Leiden , † February 28, 1779 in Leiden ) was a Dutch doctor and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Royen ".
Live and act
Adriaan van Royen is the son of Jan van Royen and Cornelia van Groenendijk. He married Adriana Johanna Wesselius, the daughter of Professor Johannes Wessel and his wife Adriana van Ruytenburg. After studying medical science at the University of Leiden, he received his doctorate in 1728 with the dissertatio botanico-medica des anatome and œconomia plantarum as a doctor of medicine there. Since June 27, 1728 he has been a member of the Royal Society based on a proposal by Hans Sloane , Francis Clifton and Johann Kaspar Scheuchzer . After receiving his doctorate, he established himself as a doctor in Leiden and in 1729 became a lecturer in botany in Leiden.
In 1732 he was appointed professor of medicine and botany at the University of Leiden . In 1730 he took over the management of the botanical garden from Herman Boerhaave , which he held until 1754. The garden was redesigned together with Carl von Linné . In 1754 he was released from his teaching duties in botany and retired in 1775. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1742/43, 1758/59 and 1770/71 . Royen also appeared as a poet.
Dedication names
Carl von Linné named the genus Royena of the ebony family (Ebenaceae) in his honor . The genus is now synonymous with Diospyros .
