Adromischus is a genus of plants fromthe thick-leaf family (Crassulaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words "άδρός" (hadros) for thick , strong and "μίσχος" (mischos) for flower stalk and refers to the thick flower stalks of the plants.

description

The species of the genus Adromischus are persistent , glabrous to glandular-sticky, herbaceous , succulent plants that grow upright to prostrate and reach a height of up to about 20 centimeters. Its succulent, stem-round shoots have a smooth, peeling bark and are often short and compressed. The entire, glabrous to glandular-haired leaves are flat to almost petal-round. They are gray or green-spotted and often powdered like a flour. The leaves are linear, elliptical, ovate to obovate or club-shaped. They are wedge-shaped at the base and blunt at the top.

The terminal inflorescence is a spike-like, upright thyrse of up to 55 centimeters in length, which consists of a few to numerous monochasias with one to five flowers . The five-fold flowers are upright and pendulous only in Adromischus phillipsiae . Their short sepals are triangular. The tubular crown is bare on the outside. Their white, pink-red to red tips are spread out until they are turned back and not grown together. The stamens are in two rows of five stamens each and can protrude from the flower tube. Their stamens are fused with the crown at the base and papilous there . The yellow anthers are spherical. The carpels are extended, the pen is short and the stigma capitate.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Adromischus is endemic in South Africa and Namibia . The first description by Charles Lemaire was published in 1852. According to Ernst van Jaarsveld, the genus Adromischus is subdivided into five sections with the following species:

  • Section Longipedunculati Poelln.
