Afterglow is the third studio album by the supergroup Black Country Communion . It was released in October 2012.

Emergence

After the success of the second studio album released in 2011, which was simply titled 2 and had reached number seven in the German album charts, Black Country Communion had released a live album in February 2012 with the title Live over Europe , which rose to number 28 had climbed the German album charts. In the same year, the group went to the studio with their producer Kevin Shirley to record their third studio album. The appointment was difficult because guitarist Joe Bonamassa in particular had numerous obligations as a solo artist: Among other things, he recorded the album Driving Towards the Daylight and the live album Beacon Theater - Live from New York .

The members of Black Country Communion therefore met on June 10, 2012 for a period of only five days. Therefore, at least two songs had to be recorded every day without the band having been prepared. For the album mainly songs were recorded that bassist and singer Glenn Hughes had originally written for a solo project, because Bonamassa could hardly find time to take part in the songwriting due to his tight schedule. The way they worked was therefore unusual: Hughes played the respective song on the acoustic guitar for the other members in the studio's control room, then the group practiced together, and then they recorded.

In addition to the CD version of the album, a “Ltd. Edition "released. This edition contains, in addition to the actual recordings, a DVD, in addition to a making-of -Video and studio video of the title Afterglow, This Is Your Time, Confessor and Midnight Sun contains. In addition, a release as a record is planned.

The magazine Rocks wrote under the heading This is what the new album sounds like, the first impression was “as positive as it is surprising,” the band had “meanwhile reached the phase of refinement, in which they filled their established identity with new content”. The eleven pieces placed on the album made “it clear how well the musicians must have felt in their skin last time” - “and how exactly they would have known the strength of their new music in the studio”. The “callousness that the opening track Big Train ” exudes is “descriptive of the whole album,” which has “a high proportion of fluid melodies, catchy hooklines and pretty twists”. What awaits the listener “in Afterglow at the end of October” (2012) “doesn't just overshadow the band's two LPs”. It is "simply phenomenal."

Peter Ehmann from undergrounded.de says, referring to the solo careers of some band members: "Who needs umpteen mediocre solo records when you can conjure up remarkable albums as a band?" and awards 8.5 out of 10 points for the album with the addition: "Here you can hear pure and unadulterated quality. Black Country Communion have managed to completely convince with" only "three studio albums ..."

The magazine Classic Rock wrote that the album was "to kneel down." The magic that reigns between the musicians culminates "once more in a true splendor of powerful songs." The group is walking "again on the trail of light formations" such as Free , Led Zeppelin , Deep Purple or The Who , but they never rip off, but develop "the classic rock of the early seventies independently." Above all, Glenn Hughes purrs and screams, gurgles and rages like "not since Purple Stormbringer ."
