Agave dasylirioides is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Dasylirion Agave".
description
Agave dasylirioides forms asymmetrical rosettes. It reaches heights of growth of 30 to 50 cm and a diameter of 60 to 100 cm. The variable, pliable, thin, flat, linear to lanceolate, striped, green to bluish leaves are 40 to 110 cm long and 2 to 3 cm wide. The light yellow leaf margins are finely toothed. The needle-like, red-brown terminal spine is 0.5 to 1.5 cm long.
The spiked, overhanging inflorescence is 1.5 to 2 m high. The yellow to green colored flowers are 10 to 15 mm long and appear on the upper half of the inflorescence, in pairs on short stems. The funnel-shaped flower tube is 8 to 12 mm long.
The egg-shaped three-chamber capsule fruits are up to 20 mm long and up to 10 mm wide. The black seeds are up to 4 mm long and 3 mm wide.
The flowering period extends from November to February.
Systematics and distribution
Agave dasylirioides grows in Mexico in the states of San Luis Potosí , Morelos and Oaxaca on volcanic slopes and in woodland at 1500 to 2200 m altitude. It is associated with cacti and succulent species.
The first description by Georg Albano by Jacobi & Carl David Bouché was published in 1865. Synonyms are Agave dealbata Lemaire ex Jacobi and Agave intrepida Greenman .
Agave dasylirioides is a member of the Striatae group . It shares morphological characteristics with Agave petrophila, but differences in size, shape, leaf, flower and fruit structure are recognizable.
Agave dasylirioides is grown in the Desert Botanical Garden in Arizona.
