Ahaura is a village in the West Coast regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The village is located in the Gray Valley of the Gray District , at the confluence of the Ahaura River and the Gray River . The New Zealand State Highway 7 and the Stillwater – Westport railway line run through the town. The nearest towns are Greymouth , 21 miles southwest and Reefton , 44 miles northeast.

The population of Ahauras was 372 in 2013, a decrease of 18 since 2006.

history

The European settlement of the area began in 1858 with the use of pastureland at the confluence of the Ahura and Gray Rivers .

education

The Awahono School-Gray Valley is a coeducational elementary school for grades 1-8 with currently 113 students. The decile rating is 4. This school was created at the beginning of 2005 from the amalgamation of the schools of Ahaura, Moonlight , Ngahere and Totara Flat .
