The Schipbeek is a tributary of the Gelders IJssel . In its upper and middle course it has different names, altogether it changes its name three times:
- Ahauser Aa : from the source to Ahaus
- Alstätter Aa : from Ahaus- Alstätte to the Dutch-German border
- Buurser Beek : from the state border to the Twente Canal
- Schipbeek : from the Twentekanal to the confluence with the IJssel
The length of the river from the source to the mouth in the Netherlands is 86 kilometers, of which 27 kilometers are in North Rhine-Westphalia. The entire catchment area covers 352 km², 151 km² of which fall in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The source is located southeast of Ahaus and southwest of Legden in the Liesner Wald at 59 meters. From the source the Ahauser Aa flows in a north-westerly direction to Ahaus. As Alstätter Aa, it crosses Alstätte and crosses the border to the Netherlands at the Haarmühle . As Buurser Beek, it flows through the towns of Buurse , Haaksbergen and Neede . From the Twentekanal, which the river crosses from the east from the German-Dutch border, it flows further west as Schipbeek via Bathmen and flows south of Deventer into the Geldersche IJssel.
