Ahmad Alaadeen (* 24. July 1934 , † 15. August 2010 in Kansas City ) was an American jazz - saxophonist and music educator .

Life

Alaadeen took lessons from Leo H. Davis in Kansas City and began performing in his hometown at the age of fourteen. He then studied at the Kansas City Conservatory of Music , Saint Mary's College of California , Chicago's DePaul University, and the Juilliard School of Music . For a time he lived in New York City , Chicago , Denver , St. Louis, and San Antonio . During his military service he played in the 4th US Army Band as a jazz saxophonist and as an oboist in the band's wind ensemble. He began his musical career in 1949; since then he has played with artists from the jazz and blues , such as with Billie Holiday , Miles Davis , Jay McShann , Ella Fitzgerald , the Count Basie Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Orchestra , Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson and with soul artists such as Gladys Knight , Smokey Robinson , The Temptations or Sam Cooke . In addition to his musicianship, he was active in training musicians in his hometown for many years. In the last few years before his death, Alaadeen worked in various fields as a musician, composer and music publisher. In addition, he has been running his own label, ASR Records, since 1995, which has also released his own recordings.

Awards

The musician has received many honors, including the Jazz Heritage Award in Kansas City , the Missouri Humanities Council's , the Community Heritage Award and the Missouri Arts Award . In addition, the Missouri Arts Council and the Mid-America Arts Alliance honored him with several awards for his company Alaadeen Enterprises, Inc. He was also awarded the Billboard Songwriting Competitions for his compositions . In 2000 he was honored in the US House of Representatives for his services to music education in his hometown.
