Air Belgium is a Belgian airline with headquarters in Mont-Saint-Guibert and operational base on the airport Charleroi Brussels South .

history

Former Chief Executive Officer of TNT Airways , Niky Terzakis, founded Air Belgium on May 27, 2016 with the help of European and Asian investors. These brought a start-up capital of 20 million euros into the company. The company, in early 2017 an agreement with Finnair Aircraft Finance closed four formerly of Finnair -operated Airbus A340-300 lease to want. The four aircraft had been stored in neutral livery at Lourdes-Tarbes Airport .

The start of flight operations between Brussels and Hong Kong was originally planned for June 2017, but was then postponed to winter 2017. The state development fund of the Walloon Region ( Société Régionale d'Investissements Wallone ) and the state development company Société fédérale de participations et d'investissement announced in November 2017 that they wanted to jointly acquire a 25 percent stake in the company. At the same time, Air Belgium announced that the start of operations would be further delayed and that it was planned for spring 2018. One of the reasons given was that the Belgian government had not yet issued the company with an Air Operator Certificate (AOC). She received this on March 13, 2018.

On March 29, 2018 Air Belgium operated its first commercial sub-charter flight for Surinam Airways from Amsterdam to Paramaribo . The start of scheduled services to Hong Kong had to be postponed again on April 30, 2018 because the company had not obtained an overflight permit from the Russian Ministry of Transport. The first scheduled flight to Hong Kong was finally carried out on June 3, 2018. Air Belgium flew to Hong Kong from Brussels-Charleroi twice a week. It was planned to increase the frequency to three to four flight pairs per week and to serve other destinations in the People's Republic of China . Due to problems with the Chinese partner company Ultour , the company announced on September 21, 2018 that it would suspend scheduled flights until further notice and only carry out ACMI leasing for other airlines. At the same time, two of the four Airbus A340s were put into storage. At the end of October 2018, Air Belgium received route rights between Brussels-Charleroi and Zhengzhou from the Chinese aviation authority CAAC . So far it is unclear whether the company will resume scheduled flights or operate this route in charter traffic.

In the northern winter of 2018/19, only wet leases were used . Although Air Belgium planned to resume scheduled connections from Belgium to Hong Kong from the end of March 2019, the company withdrew from these plans at short notice in mid-March; According to the company, there was a lack of operational and economic framework conditions.

Since December 7, 2019, Charleroi has been serving Pointe-à-Pitre Airport in Guadeloupe with onward flights to Martinique Airport in Martinique .
