The Ajay River or Ajoy River ( Hindi : अजय नदी) is an approx. 288 km long tributary of the Hugli in the Indian state of West Bengal ; it belongs to the catchment area of the Ganges .
course
The Ajay River rises in the Chakai Hills in the southeast of the Indian state of Bihar at a height of approx. 331 m. It flows in a south-easterly direction and after approx. 5 km it reaches the northeast of the state of Jharkhand , but the largest section (approx. 152 km) flows through the state of West Bengal , where it joins the Hugli ( approx. 2 km north of the city of Katwa sometimes called Bhagirathi ) opens.
Tributaries and reservoirs
The Ajay River has several tributaries; the largest is the Hinglo River coming from the northwest . Since 2003 it has been dammed in the state of Jharkhand in the Sikatiya reservoir.
Cities
Because of the flooding of the Ajay, which occurs especially in the monsoon season, towns and cities near the shore are rare.
history
Small archaeological finds prove the settlement of the river banks in the late Stone Age . The Greek envoy and traveler Megasthenes mentions a river named Amystis , which some equate with the Ajay. During the British colonial period it was still partially navigable. Today it forms the border between the West Bengal districts of Bardhaman and Birbhum .
