The South Westphalia Music Education Center is located in Schmallenberg in the village of Bad Fredeburg .

History of the structure

Advanced school in the 1930s

Beginnings until 1947 (from girls' advanced school to educational institution)

The building of the music education center had an eventful history. In the early 1920s, the house was planned to accommodate a secondary school for girls. The school was designed by the architect and district builder Wilhelm Kathol . In August 1929 the girls' school and boarding school moved into the building. The inauguration of the advanced school took place on 23/24. September 1929 in the presence of the President Johannes Gronowski . At Easter 1930 it was expanded to six grades (grades 8–13).

But as early as 1935, the building was rented to the paramilitary fighting organization SA because of considerable debts . The SA later acquired the building for half the construction price in order to set up an SA leadership school there. This subsequently became the only SA group leader school in Germany. For the then city of Fredeburg, the school was not only a financial disaster. For a while there were considerable disputes, fights and even assaults between the Catholic rural youth and the undesirable SA students. However, the SA school was not moved to Erwitte until 1944. Subsequently, until the first air raid on April 4, 1945, the house was a military hospital .

Under pressure from the British, a police school was opened in the building in October 1945 . After the population intervened, the school moved in 1946. Then there were considerations to turn the house into an educational institution . In 1947 the Ministry of Culture of North Rhine-Westphalia received the property from the English administration.

1948 to 2003 (establishment of the German Farmers' Association)

After that, Andreas Hermes , the then President of the German Farmers' Association , tried to found a farming college in Fredeburg. A year later, the first training courses took place in the new educational facility of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The first head of the educational facility was Viktor Engelhardt . The first farmer college course took place in 1948/49. It was preceded by the founding formalities of the "German Farmers College Fredeburg". Georg Raederscheidt became head of the farming college in 1948. Professors Hellmut Wollenweber , Franz Gerl , Herbert Kötter and Wolfgang Legler worked at the German Farmers College in Fredeburg . The German Farmers College did not acquire the building until 1952. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the farmer's college, Federal President Theodor Heuss came to Fredeburg.

At the beginning of the 1960s, when the extension was built, it was renamed. At a meeting on May 9, 1960, a new name for the farmer's college was decided upon with the amendment of the statutes. At the suggestion of the youth ministry, the farmer's college was renamed the Deutsche Landjugend-Akademie Fredeburg. Scientific research in the field of youth work was added as a new task.

The extension was inaugurated in 1963 by the then Federal President Heinrich Lübke . In 1996 around 19,000 participants visited the DLA facilities. The Deutsche Landjugend-Akademie-Fredeburg eV (DLA) was later renamed the Andreas Hermes Academy.

2003 to the present (Academy Bad Fredeburg, Music Education Center South Westphalia)

In 2003 the building came back into municipal ownership. Then the name was changed to the Bad Fredeburg Academy. In the academy there was a center for culture, education and tourism. The academy's partners were the Humboldt Institute , the Hochsauerlandkreis music school and the city of Schmallenberg.

Ten years later the academy was rebuilt and expanded as part of the Regionale 2013 to become the "South Westphalia Music Education Center". The costs for the new construction and renovation of the old building amounted to EUR 8.19 million. The South Westphalian music education center was officially inaugurated by the North Rhine-Westphalian building minister Michael Groschek on July 3, 2015. The offices of Sauerland-Tourismus eV and the International Society for Music Pedagogical Training eV (IGMF) are currently also located in the building.
